In 1976, Birx received a BS degree in chemistry from Houghton College. Then in 1980 she earned a Doctor of Medicine from Hershey Medical Center.
She served as an active-duty officer in United States Army from 1980 to 1994. From 1994 to 2008 she achieved the rank of Colonel.
1980-1989, She worked as a physician at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
1983-1986, Brix completed a one-year internship and did a two-year residency in internal medicine.
1996-2005, Brix became the Director of the United States Military HIV Research Program. She led the HIV clinical trial of RV 144, the first vaccine being effective in lowering HIV contracting risk.
