Timeline
1995 to 1997, he was selected in the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. In 1998 and 1999, he played for the Seattle Sounders of the USL First Division. He won the offensive MVP award in 1999.
In 2000, Russel moved to the Polish side Lech Poznan and played only one game in a league cup. He then moved back to Major League Soccer and joined San Jose Earthquakes.
He is ninth all-time in Quakes history in assists and is tied for the first in club history in playoff appearances with 14. In 2001, he scored three goals and nine assists with San Jose.
Russell was selected to the 2001 MLS All-Star Game but was later replaced due to injury. In 2008 Russel returned to the San Jose Earthquakes as an assistant coach. For the last two games of the 2014 regular season, Russell became interim head coach. From 2017 to 2020 he was part of the team management of Reno 1868.
Now currently, he is part of Toronto FC as an assistant coach.
