Donahue graduated with a degree in business from the University of Notre Dame in 1957.
He worked as a news director of a local radio station in 1958. In 1959 he was hired as a reporter for a News broadcast in Dayton, Ohio.
Dayton TV station gave him a morning newscast from 1963 to 1967.
In 1970, he created and hosted The Phil Donahue talk show. This was the first talk in the history show that included audience participation. This show aired its last episode on September 13, 1996, after running for 29 years,
